Étendue
We cannot navigate and place ourselves only with maps that make the landscape dream-proof, impervious to the imagination. Such maps… encourage the elimination of wonder from our relationship with the world. And once wonder has been chased from our thinking about the land, then we are lost. (Robert Macfarlane, The Wild Places. 2007)

RESIDENCY
Undercurrent
Intro
We presently live in a future-orientated and deeply politically-charged era of possible natural resource shortages – including the monitoring, management, development and ownership of water resources.
Plan
During this project, I will be paying particular attention to the natural water sources that currently supply the internationally shared space of the Parc Naturel Régional Scarpe-Escaut – observing the role that water plays in the life of the park and the people who live and work in it.
My residency will explore the waterways of the PNRSE, spending a focused period of time in the field making work about these natural resources. I am interested to survey the landscape of the park from the water’s edge – to see what the landscape looks like from a limited and expanded point of view. I will be searching for signs of human interaction and intervention on these waterways, creating photographic narratives to describe activities that take place within the borders of the park.
To further my research and arts practice, I will be making a natural inquiry of the site to create photographic works under the broader themes of Sector and Frontier. These will become critical markers, building on work involving the exploration of near and distant viewpoints and the ‘space between’.
