Mapping Wind and Water

Intro

The project resonates with the activity of sailing, and a sailor’s haptic and kinetic knowledge of the wind. The wind propels us, cariies us, moves us, uplifts us. We can feel free and fixed at the same time.

Plan

Using a small portable flag as a visual reference point, I propose to make a survey of the wind along the length of Faversham Creek – from the town to more remote outposts of the estuary. In collaboration with local people – sharing knowledge, stories and memories of historical, contemporary and personal significance – sites will be selected and located along the creek.

This project uses a methodology of experimental surveys, walking and public participation. I will use a multi-media approach to mapping the wind, recording GPS coordinates and wind speed whilst making photographic images, both analogue and digital. The images will capture the response of the flag to the wind, citing the object briefly in the landscape, always looking toward open water.
